5 Sources of Water That Can Cause Basement Flooding
- Surface water: When the water at the surface of the soil exceeds the soil’s capability to absorb it, it often runs off into basements. This water can come from a wide range of issues, including problems with gutter systems, landscape or pavement slopes, or failing sealant.
- Groundwater: If the water is coming up through the floor, it’s because the groundwater is the issue. It can be a sign that your drainage system around your foundation is failing, or that the soil is saturated, pushing water into the open space in your basement.
- Inclement weather: Severe thunderstorms, excessive rain or snowfall (hello l ake-effect snow!), hurricanes, or other factors that are leading to flooding can saturate the ground’s capability to absorb it or allow it to seep in through small cracks.
- Broken pipes: Whether by freezing, age, or other damage, pipes can begin to leak, either lightly or dramatically. However, this type of water source is often easy to identify and can be quickly stopped by shutting off water to the pipe.
- Sewer backups: Whether it’s the storm sewer or sanitary sewer, a clog or backup in this system can allow the water to back up into your home or business. Unfortunately, this is often easily identified by a foul smell.
